Dodge Colt Fuel Sending Unit

Fuel sending unit is essential in the measurement of fuel in the tank especially in the Dodge Colt vehicles. It is mainly used for sensing the remaining fuel and passing the information to the gauge located on the dashboard. This is made possible by the use of a float mechanism that translates its position on a variable resistor to obtain the respective readout. Finally when the amount of fuel in the tank reaches a certain level, the Fuel Sending Unit sends a signal to turn the low fuel light on when the driver is around. Speaking of the Fuel Sending Unit, if there is a problem with this unit, the gauge will not work properly, the optimal thing is that if the problematic unit is known, it will not be very difficult to solve the problem.

Dodge Colt Fuel Sending Unit Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What steps should you take to diagnose an incorrect reading on the fuel gauge, and how do you check the fuel tank transmitter on Dodge Colt?
A: An incorrect reading on the fuel gauge may be due to a faulty gauge or instrument voltage stabiliser. Where this has been proved not to be the case, turn your attention to checking the transmitter in the fuel tank. Disconnect the battery and remove the spare wheel. Detach the small cover plate from the floor of the spare wheel compartment to expose the tank transmitter unit. Disconnect the electrical leads, remove the transmitter securing screws and withdraw the unit carefully from the tank. Cover the hole immediately to prevent dirt entering and fuel vapour escaping. A tester will now be required to check the resistance of the unit at various float positions. Connect the tester between the terminal on the transmitter and the unit mounting plate. With the float arm in the fully raised position, the indicated resistance should be between 14.9 and 19.1 ohms. With the float arm fully lowered the resistance should be between 113.5 and 126.5 ohms. As the float arm is moved from fully lowered to fully raised so the resistance should alter smoothly in a consistently increasing series of increments. If necessary, the float arm can be bent very gently to make the float positions agree with those.
