- Q: How to remove and replace a water pump on Dodge Colt?A: Disconnect the battery negative lead and drain the cooling system. Disconnect the radiator hose from the coolant pump. Release the alternator mounting and adjuster bolts, push the alternator in towards the engine and slip the drivebelt from the pulleys. Unbolt the water pump pulley (1410 cc engine) or the pulley and fan blades (1597 cc engine). Remove the timing belt, camshaft sprocket and belt tensioner. Unbolt and remove the water pump. If the pump is leaking or noisy in operation, renew the pump complete as repair bits and spare parts are not available. Refitting is a reversal of removal. Make sure that the mating surfaces of engine and pump are quite clean and use a new gasket smeared with jointing compound. Also use a new O-ring at the coolant distribution pipe joint. Note the locations of the different types of bolt and to which bolt the alternator adjuster link is attached. Refit the timing belt and other components again. Reconnect the radiator hose. Refit the water pump pulley and fan blades (1597 cc engine). Fit and tension the water pump drivebelt. Reconnect the battery and fill the cooling system.
