Dodge Durango Air Bag Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: What are the key features and safety precautions associated with the Supplemental Restraint System,Air Bag and Air Bag Control Module on Dodge Durango?
A: These models have a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS); popularly known as the airbag system which has not less than two airbags for the driver and front seat occupant intended to minimize risk to the occupants during frontal impacts. The airbag control module is located on the floor of the vehicle below the instrument panel and just above the dashboard; additional side Torso/Side AIRBAG can be provided on the models with the rear side curtain which contains the "SAS - AIRBAG" logo at the headlining. The airbag module consists of the airbag and the inflator unit, the bag inflates almost at once on reception of a signal from the control module through a clockspring; this is a flat, band-like conductor that remains electrically continuous even if the steering wheel makes a rotation. The passenger airbag is located in the upper part of the dashboard above the glove box, which has an ON/OFF button for disabling the airbag when using a child seat; It is not recommended to delete the airbag, unless it has deployed. If present, side curtain airbags are mounted above the headliner and cover area between A and C pillars; these should be replaced only in case of deployment. The Airbag Control Module (ACM) controls the airbag system, and tests it on every start, with an indicator that illuminates if all is well, or if there is a problem. In addition to the side-curtain airbags, there are Side Impact Airbag Control Modules (SIACMs) installed behind the B-pillar trim of the vehicle. It is often required to disable the system when some of its components are being serviced; thus, it is necessary to know how to do it. In order to disable the system the ignition has to be switched off, and the negative terminal of the battery has to be disconnected, and after that the person has to wait for at least two minutes. To enable the system, join the negative terminal of the battery and start the engine, check the Air bag lamp to verify if it is working. Passenger seat also has weight sensor module for the Occupant Classification System (OCS) which controls the airbag release depending on the weight of the occupant; therefore it is dangerous to allow anyone sit on passenger side if the seat is missing until a dealer service department check on the airbag and OCS to avoid fatality in case of an accident.
