Dodge Neon Battery Cable

Schematic Image Automotive battery cables are made of strands of copper wire that always connect the battery to the vehicle electrical system to enable the starter to operate and turn the engine on. These battery cables can easily wear out over time because of oxidation, warping, and or damage to the rubber insulation thereby posing a problem for starting. It is also important to note that different battery cables may have been used in the different models of Dodge Neon, however, premium replacing cables can be purchased to solve the issues with power supply. It is a good practice to check the condition of the battery cables on a more frequent basis, since bad connections due to frayed or corroded cables and poor contact between the battery and automobile leads to a faulty battery, and starting problems. To increase the efficiency of Dodge Neon power supply, one should pay particular attention to battery cables condition and use a new one if needed.

Dodge Neon Battery Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to inspect and replace battery cables on Dodge Neon?
A: Periodically inspect the entire length of each battery cable for damage, cracked or burned insulation and corrosion. Poor battery cable connections can cause starting problems and decreased engine performance. Check the cable-to-terminal connections at the ends of the cables for cracks, loose wire strands and corrosion. The presence of white, fluffy deposits under the insulation at the cable terminal connection is a sign that the cable is corroded and should be replaced. Check the terminals for distortion, missing mounting bolts and corrosion. When removing the cables always disconnect the negative cable from the negative battery post first and hook it up last, or the tool used to loosen the cable clamps could accidentally short the battery. Even if you're only replacing the positive cable, be sure to disconnect the negative cable first. Note that there are two negative battery cables. The smaller negative battery cable is grounded to the left side of the engine compartment, near the battery. The larger negative battery cable is grounded to an upper transaxle-to-engine bolt. Before removing either cable, note its routing to ensure correct installation. Disconnect the positive cable from the battery. Trace the positive and negative battery cables and disengage them from all cable clips and guides. Remove the bolt that grounds the battery negative cable to the engine. After removing the engine ground bolt, trace the positive battery cable to the red plastic housing on top of the starter solenoid and remove the nut on the starter solenoid terminal. If you have difficulty removing the starter solenoid terminal nut from above, raise the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands. Clean the threads of the starter solenoid terminal or ground connection with a wire brush to remove rust and corrosion. Apply a light coat of battery terminal corrosion inhibitor or petroleum jelly to the threads to prevent future corrosion. Reconnecting the lower end of any of the three battery cables is the reverse of removal. After attaching the lower end of the new cable(s), install the battery. Before connecting the new cable(s) to the battery, make sure that the cable reaches the battery post without having to be stretched. Installation is otherwise the reverse of removal.
