Inspect the control arm balljoints for looseness anytime they are separated from the steering knuckle. If the balljoint is loose, or if the ballstud can be turned, replace the balljoint. To inspect the upper balljoint, loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then remove the wheel. Raise the lower control arm with a floor jack to simulate normal ride height. To inspect the lower balljoint, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Place a floor jack under the lower control arm, near the outer end, and raise it until it is supporting the vehicle's weight. If replacement is indicated, remove the steering knuckle or tension strut; the balljoint is press fit in the steering knuckle and tension strut. Equipment rental yards and some auto parts stores have these tools available for rent. If not, take the vehicle (or the steering knuckle) to an automotive machine shop or other qualified repair facility.
