    Q:
How to replace CV Boot on Chrysler Cirrus? Posted by Customer
    A:
Where problems develop in the CV joints, no component is available separately but the entire CV Boot, as an assembly, requires replacement with a new or reconstructed one on exchange basis. Models from 1995 to 1997 do not permit removal of the outer CV joint from the axleshaft; the only serviceable part on the outer CV joint is the hub/bearing shield, which presses onto the outer CV joint housing splined shaft, so should there be a failure in bearings or the sealing boot, the entire CV Boot requires replacement. To disassemble the outer joint boot on the 1998 and later models, first, disconnect the CV Boot from the vehicle and suspend it in a vise, with soft clamps, so as not to harm the part. Loosen the bolts and inspect the CV joint - play should be minimal and the movement smooth; after this, trim and remove the boot clamps. Before removing the CV joint locate it on the axleshaft, then remove the boot and then use a soft-faced hammer in order to knock on the axleshaft and separate that outer CV joint but beware not to cause any damage to the splines or cage. This requires the user to take off the large retaining circlip and lift off the sealing boot. Lubricate the CV joint if necessary and if there are signs of damage or wear of this component, replace the outer CV joint with an assembly. For installation, the CV joint should be packed with half of the special grease, then the splined end of the axleshaft should be covered in tape to protect the new boot, and the new clamp, then the boot should be put on and the tape removed, and the large retaining circlip should be put on. Bring the CV joint assembly to the positions of the match-marks applied earlier and plane it onto the shaft with the help of a brass hammer, with it set in a locked state. Remove any excess grease from the groove of the CV Boot and make sure that it is sitting well and fix it with a large clamp and use crimping tool. To replace the outer CV joint hub/bearing shield, first, unbolt the CV Boot, secure the assembly in a vise and using a hammer and pin punch knock the hub/bearing shield off the outer CV joint shaft and replace the shield onto the axleshaft. Inner joint boot After that disassemble the inner joint boot; remove the CV Boot and mount the tripod housing on the axleshaft, check if it has excessive play and mark the tripod housing to the axleshaft. When the boot clamps have been released, slide the boot backwards and disconnect it from the tripod housing while paying a lot of attention to the spider assembly bearings. It is advisable to clean all of them and also to look for signs of damage as replacement parts for these particular CV Boots are not easily found. When replacing the boots during reassembly make sure the new ones are made from the same material as the original. The splined end of the axleshaft should be wrapped with a tape; the new clamp should be installed together with the sealing boot to the spider assembly, which should be aligned by using the match-marks before fixing the snap-ring. Grease the tripod joint housing and then fix it on the axleshaft; make sure that the sealing boot fits the joint correctly. A small round blunt 'screwdriver' is then used to apply an even pressure and properly align the axleshaft after which a large clamp is used to fasten the sealing boot with the help of a crimping tool before refitting the CV Boot.
