    Q:
How to remove and replace the timing chain and Timing Cover in 3.6L V6 engine on Dodge Ram 3500? Posted by Customer
    A:
It is very intricate and any mistakes could lead to serious damage to the engine. You should only try it if you are extremely experienced or consult a professional. Take out the timing cover, air intake resonator, brake vacuum pump, drive belt, thermostat housing, radiator hoses, heater hose, alternator crankshaft pulley upper intake manifold and valve covers. Take care not to spoil the magnetic timing wheels on camshafts. Remove both up and down oil pans. If necessary take off the timing cover and coolant outlet housing. Temporarily set up the crankshaft pulley bolt then bring together the timing marks on both crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. Check that the phaser marks are in line with plated links. Indicate direction of rotation for all chains. Press tensioner plungers then detach timing gear splash shield. Unbolt oil pump tensioner and sprocket. Put camshaft phaser lock tool between the phasers and loosen oil control valves. Remove phasers as well as timing chains. Inspect parts for wear or damage. Replace if need be. Tidy up units then fit new chains. Rotate crankshaft verifying alignment of marks. Install before doing this coolant housing together with water pump gaskets. Apply RTV sealant so as to have a proper installation of your Timing Cover. Tighten bolts on cover before finishing other installation steps. Fill engine with coolant or oil; start vehicle for leak testing.

    Q:
How to remove and reinstall the timing chain and Cover on Chrysler 300? Posted by Customer
    A:
Take off the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Remove coolant from cooling system and engine oil also. Take away such components as engine cover, air filter housing, air intake duct, drivebelt, engine cooling fans and air conditioning compressor. Then there are alternator, drivebelt tensioner, idler pulleys, vibration damper and power steering pump to be removed. Get dipstick tube, oil pan, pickup tube, heater hoses, water pump, timing cover bolts and front cover out of the way. Remove an oil pump too. Reinsert a bolt in the end of the crankshaft, now turn it until it puts a crankshaft sprocket timing mark at 6 o'clock position and camshaft timing mark at 12 o'clock position. Withdraw a tensioner and install a drill bit to secure it in this retracted place. Remove all traces of old gasket material or sealant from your shop rag that is plugged into an opening at front side portion of oil pan's drain hole. Run screwdriver blade between lower edge of oil pan's sealing surface on an engine block as well as upper edge of old gasket material or sealant compressing tensioner spring. The appropriate tightening sequence for these bolts on each side needs to be followed here. Drain plug should not be over tightened or it will make removal difficult later when changing fluids. Fill coolant reservoir slowly with thirty percent ethylene glycol solution to avoid possible overheating which may occur due rapid change in temperature. Run in engine and inspect for leaks. Do not run without radiator cap installed if coolant has reached operating temperature first. Therefore all nomenclature mentioned above can be used interchangeably. Transmission fluid is checked using special probes or sensors installed. Transmission fluid level is checked under vehicle running conditions. Techs should check transmission fluid while vehicles are performing operations. Similarly, transmission fluid should be determined with regard to many factors including how often you run car. Transmission fluid should be checked as part of preventive maintenance routine. Transmission fluid level is determined by variations in temperature. Transmission fluid is supposed to be changed once a while. It is advised that transmission fluid can only be analyzed using dipstick which can measure the amount of fluid in it. Hence, transmission fluid should only be examined using dipstick.

    Q:
How to remove and install Timing Chain in 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 engine on Dodge Durango? Posted by Customer
    A:
Preparation for this work requires special tools, so be sure to read this entire technique and acquire these tools before starting. For the correct valve timing, the engines incorporate three timing chains of which the main timing chain the crankshaft and pistons together with the idler gear while the two other secondary timing chains attached on the camshaft sprockets. First, get the piston number 1 cylinder at the top of the compression stroke, then remove the negative terminal of the battery, and drain the cooling system, then the drive belt also remove the engine cooling fan and shroud. Disconnect the heater hoses and the lower radiator hose from the timing chain cover, remove the power steering pump without disconnecting the fluid, and the alternator, and the air conditioning compressor if fitted. The camshaft sprocket aligning requires the accessory drive belt tensioner, valve covers, spark plugs, and all the rocker arms to be uninstalled to avoid piston striking of the valves. The camshaft position sensor is located high on the driver side valve cover and can be simply unbolted and removed, the piston number one has be at TDC on the exhaust stroke, the crankshaft damper/pulley, timing chain cover and water pump assembly will need to be removed. Put shop rags over the oil pan opening; retract the primary timing chain tensioner; and disconnect both secondary timing chain tensioners. To do this, you have to unscrew the camshaft sprocket retaining bolts, then take off the camshaft sprockets though you have to hold the camshafts as they turn. Loosen and take off the idler sprocket bolt and along with the idler sprocket, crankshaft sprocket and timing chains as a combine unit. Camshaft and crankshaft sprockets should also be checked for wear, the chains should be checked for cracks and tensioner components should be checked for signs of wear and major portions replaced. While installing the part make sure that the timing chain guides and the tensioner arms are fitted properly and the primary and secondary timing chain tensioners are fixed properly. Slide and fit the timing chains and the links correctly in place with the help of the idler sprocket, and fit the sprockets properly to the camshaft hubs. After the bolts have been removed and before reinstalling them, wash them and grease them as well, ensure that all the links of the timing chain are in order, and manually turn the engine in order to align the timing marks. Last but not the least, replace the timing chain cover and make sure that all parts are properly fixed; the engine oil and the cooling system should be replaced.

    Q:
How to remove and install Timing Chain in 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 engine on Dodge Ram 1500? Posted by Customer
    A:
The removal of timing system components begins with precautions given the complexity of the system and also possibility of severe engine damage as a result of an unskillful handling. These involve disconnecting the battery, draining the cooling system and removing various engine parts like the cooling fan, drivebelt, fan shroud, heater hoses, radiator hose, power steering pump, alternator, air conditioning compressor etc. The valve covers are then taken off to aid camshaft sprocket alignment and prevent piston-valve contact also. This process requires that you position No. 1 pis- ton at TDC on the exhaust stroke and remove crankshaft damper/pulley timing chain cover and water pump as a unit noting location and bolt types. Additionally these secondary chain tensioners are removed while taking care to detach camshaft sprockets without damaging camshafts. At this stage again these chains have been removed as one assembly along with idler sprocket and crankshaft sprocket that must be positioned accurately for maintaining alignment throughout this entire step. This is followed by inspection of components such as wear or stretch in chains plus proper operation of tensioners/guides. For installation purpose they are reassembled onto idler sprocket while carefully aligning camshaft chains together with primary chain right on a bench top. After that re-check every process applying it again into another engine revolution through two complete turns before finally tightening all remaining bolts with sealer/gasket integrity kept up to its capacity. It ends by changing oil filter as well as filling up cooling.
