    Q:
What does the manufacturer recommend for the installation of the steering column on Dodge Challenger? Posted by Customer
    A:
Though reused fasteners that were used during previous mounting could be used, the manufacturer advises that new mounting fasteners be used in the installation. Starting with the vehicle parked with wheels parallel to the kerb and the column fully stretched forward. Remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and let it stay loose for not less than two minutes with the aim of discharging the backup supply of power to the airbag. For those that have electric telescoping columns, move the column to the mid tilt position. Pull the steering wheel out and key off the engine and turn it to the Lock position to prevent the turning of the steering shaft. Those in the 2010 and the earlier models should ensure that one of the clockspring mounting fasteners is loose as it helps to remain centered. Take off the knee bolster and reinforcement panel at the underneath followed by the Steering Column Control Module. Remove the plastic shroud at the end of the column and also the tilt adjuster handle if present. All the lower steering column mounting fasteners at the firewall must be also removed and for GM 2010, and prior models, remove the instrument cluster. Pull out the tab on the connector which releases the tabs holding the electrical wiring harness for the column. Lift the front of the vehicle using a hydraulic jack and put it on jackstands firmly. At the underside position the steers shaft to the lower coupling steers, then remove the pinch bolt to make space between the two steers. If the vehicle has electric telescoping column pull off the brace fitted to the dash support and the column. For the 2010 and earlier models, the removal of the pivot bolt properly located on the column and the upper steering column mounting bolt enables the removal of the column. In 2011 and future years remove the column forward mounting bolts next the rear mounting nuts. During installation it is recommended that the lower boot be fitted correctly at the base of the column and passed through the fire wall. Insert the front of the steering column into the slot and put the top and pivot mounting screws as far in but do not tighten. If fitted with the brace reinstall it and perform the reverse of the above stated process of removal. Last, restore the mounting fasteners to the required torque and follow with the procedure of the steering gear calibration applicable to vehicles with the EPS.
