Every automatic-transmission automobile contains an air-to-oil cooler as a building block or an option as well as an oil-to-coolant cooler. External transmission oil coolers are generally located above the radiator, but their size can be different, as well as the location and number of mounting bolts. First of all unscrew the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and put a drain pan under the fittings on the oil cooler line to collect the dropped transmission fluid. Lift the car until it is on jackstands so as to make it easier to check the belts. Taking out the tool that was used in the locking of the fittings in the transmission oil cooler line, it will open the supply line for a moment, pull the line from the cooler and plug the point to minimize leakage. Either separate the transmission oil cooler hoses from the side tank of the radiator or from the transmission, or remove the upper cover and support of the radiator and proceed to the cooler. Pull out the cooler by retracting the mounting bolts endowed for this task although one should ensure not tighten the oil cooler tubes or the radiator fins. If the cooler was taken out to flush it after a transmission failure, it is recommended to have it flushed by a dealer service department or a transmission shop because a properly flushing requires special tools. Reassembly is done in the reverse order of disassembly but before that it is advised to check the level of the transmission fluid and add the fluid if required.
