Have the air conditioning system discharged by an automotive air conditioning technician. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Remove the air filter housing. Disconnect the refrigerant line(s) from the accumulator. On Dakota models, use a special tool to disconnect the accumulator line to the evaporator at the firewall. Plug the open fittings to prevent the entry of dirt and moisture. Remove the accumulator and bracket. If a new accumulator is being installed, add 2 oz (60 ml) of new refrigerant oil (a type designated as compatible with refrigerant R-134a) to the new accumulator. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note: New R-134a compatible 0-rings should be used in each fitting during reassembly. Take the vehicle back to the shop that discharged it. Have the air conditioning system evacuated, charged and leak tested.
