    Q:
Where is the Neutral start and back-up light switch located, and what are its functions on Chrysler Imperial? Posted by Customer
    A:
The Neutral start and back-up light switch is located at the lower front edge of the transaxle, with two switches present on four-speed models (three-speed models have only the one on the right). The right switch is for the Neutral start and back-up lights, while the left switch is for the selector indicator, and the connector above them is for the output speed sensor. This switch controls the back-up lights and grounds the starter solenoid circuit when the transaxle is in Park or Neutral, allowing the engine to start. Before checking the switch, ensure the shift cable is properly adjusted. Unplug the connector and use an ohmmeter to check for continuity between the center terminal and the case, which should exist only when the transaxle is in Park or Neutral. Check for continuity between the two outer terminals, which should exist only when the transaxle is in Reverse, and ensure no continuity exists between either outer terminal and the case. If the switch fails any tests, replace it with a new one. Position a drain pan under the switch to catch any fluid released during removal, then unscrew the switch using a box-end wrench to avoid damage. Move the shift lever from Park to Neutral and check if the switch operating fingers are centered in the opening. Wrap the threads of the new switch with Teflon tape, install it in the case, and tighten it to the specified torque. Plug in the connector and repeat the checks on the new switch, then check the fluid level and add fluid as required.

    Q:
How do you remove and install the Back Up Light Switch and Neutral Safety Switch on Dodge Ramcharger? Posted by Customer
    A:
To test the switch, remove the wiring connector and check for continuity between the center pin of the switch (neutral start pin) and the transmission housing, ensuring continuity exists only in the Park and Neutral positions. Before removing a switch that seems faulty, check the shift linkage adjustment. The back-up light circuit operates through the two outer pins on the switch, with continuity present between these pins only when Reverse is selected. To remove the switch, place a clean container beneath it and unscrew it. After removing the switch, move the selector to Park and then Neutral to verify that the switch operating fingers are centered in the opening. Finally, install the replacement switch along with a new seal, tightening it appropriately and topping off the transmission fluid.
