Remove the camshafts and then the rocker arms. If the lash adjusters are still in the head, lift them out now, ensuring to keep them in order for reinstallation in the same locations. Inspect each adjuster for wear and damage, especially on the ball tip that contacts the rocker arm. Since lash adjusters can become clogged, consider replacing them if there are concerns about their condition or if the engine is making valve "tapping" noises. The lash adjusters should be partially filled with engine oil, which is indicated by minimal plunger action when depressed. If there is excessive plunger travel, submerge the lash adjuster in clean engine oil and pump the plunger until the travel is eliminated. If the plunger still moves within the lash adjuster when filled with oil, it is defective and needs replacement. After replacing the adjusters and restarting the engine, expect some "tapping" noises. Warm up the engine and then increase the speed from idle to 3,000 rpm for one minute; if the adjusters do not become silent, replace the defective ones.
