    The fuel evaporative emissions control (EVAP) system collects the fuel vapours and then injects them into the intake air/fuel mixture during operation of the engine. The charcoal canister is positioned to the right front corner of the fuel tank, once the engine is off, the fuel vapors move by hoses to the EVAP canister where they are stored until the next running of the car. Vapors go through a control valve and a flow management valve, which is also a liquid eliminator to prevent fuel mixing; these valves are a replaceable, but the flow management valve requires replacement of the fuel tank if it gets spoiled. Rollover valves that are located in the fuel tanks stop fuel flow through vapor hoses should a rollover occur and is by design non-serviceable. The PCM uses a proportional purge solenoid to control the flow of fuel vapor through the EVAP canister to the throttle body; it is not active during cold starts or warm-up. The system also has a Leak Detection Pump (LOP) that runs a leak check and will store diagnostic trouble codes should they find a leak. For removal and replacement, the proportional purge solenoid is located in the lower right rear corner of the engine compartment, and must be disconnected from the electrical connector and the EVAP hoses to be taken out of its mounting bracket. This is described as the LOP which, situated in the vicinity of the fuel tank, necessitates the tank to be unlatched, then hoses and electrical connector have to be disconnected and the mounting bolts have to be withdrawn. Another filter is the LOP filter which is on top of the fuel tank, behind the EVAP hose connection with the removal of the fuel tank bolt. On 2009 models, the Natural Vacuum Leak Detector (NVLD) is located at the side of the car to where one has to remove the electric connector, the bolt that holds the bracket and the purge hoses. The EVAP canister comes out of its mounting bracket using a push pin and spring clips, and the fuel tank has to be removed, along with the hoses from the canister. The procedures for the installation of all components are opposite to those for the removal of the components.

    The evaporative emissions control system prevents fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere by trapping them inside the fuel tank until the pressure overcomes the pressure-relief/rollover valve, routing them to a charcoal canister for temporary storage. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors engine parameters and activates the EVAP purge control solenoid to draw vapors into the intake manifold for combustion. In 1995 to 1997 models, the charcoal canister is located behind the right front bumper, while in 1998 and later models, it is on top of the fuel tank, and both are maintenance-free. Common symptoms of a fault include a strong fuel odor or raw fuel leaking from the canister, especially in hot temperatures, with the Leak Detection Pump (LOP) indicating leaks by storing fault codes and illuminating the CHECK ENGINE light. The fuel filler cap features a two-way pressure-vacuum relief valve to manage pressure and vacuum inside the tank. All models have two rollover valves to close vapor vent ports if the vehicle flips. The Onboard Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR) system in 1998 and later models uses a control valve to vent displaced vapors to the charcoal canister during refueling, preventing refueling with the engine running. If the CHECK ENGINE light is on, checking the gas cap and system hoses is essential, as a loose cap or damaged hose is often the cause. Further diagnosis requires special equipment and should be performed by a qualified repair shop.     The fuel EVAP system captures fuel vapors and then vents them to join the intake manifold air fuely mixture during operation of the engine. The charcoal canister is mounted at the right front corner of the fuel tank, and when the engine is turned off, fumes move by hoses toward the EVAP canister where it is stored until the next time the vehicle is driven. Vapors pass through a control valve and a flow management valve which also serves as the liquid separation; the flow management valve is a replaceable part whereas the control valve is not, meaning that when the control valve get damaged, the fuel tank has to be replaced. A rollover valve in the fuel tank is located and prevents fuel flow through vapor hoses if it rolls over; it is also non-adjustable. There is an electrically controlled proportional purge solenoid that lets vapor get into the throttle body and this one works when the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) throws open the EVAP canister, but this is not active during cold start and warm up. Other California models from 2000 to 2002 are the LOP, a Leak Detection Pump while in 2003, models made in California have a Natural Vacuum Leak Detection or the NVLD tool. To replace, the proportional purge solenoid must be lifted and the electrical connector removed and hoses labeled before disconnecting them; the solenoid is slid off a clip. In the LOP procedure it is necessary to disconnect the electrical connector, to unbolt the rear stabilizer bar bracket and to remove together with the bracket the pump. The second is the replacement of the EVAP canister in which the vapor hoses are labelled and disconnected, the mounting nuts are removed and the canister is removed from the bracket. For other models not from California, the breather is on top of the EVAP canister, which can be reached only after removing the hose and loosening a bolt to get to it, and making sure that it is in the right position before replacement.

    The EVAP canister purge solenoid is on the left side of the firewall, below the power brake booster. Remove the air filter housing and disconnect the EVAP hoses from the solenoid. Slide out the red lock and disconnect the electrical connector. To install, reverse the removal process. The EVAP canister is located behind the left rear wheel opening.
