    Q:
How do you remove and install the Timing Chain and Timing cover in V8 engine on Dodge Ramcharger? Posted by Customer
    A:
Drain the cooling system and remove the water pump. If applicable, remove the power steering pump. Take off the fuel lines and fuel pump. Remove the pulley from the vibration damper, along with the bolt and washer attaching the damper to the crankshaft, while locking the crankshaft by holding the flywheel with a suitable tool; a large breaker bar or impact wrench will be necessary for the crankshaft bolt removal. Use a puller to detach the damper. For 318/360 engines, loosen the oil pan bolts and remove the pan bolt on each side. Take off the timing cover bolts and remove the cover, being careful not to damage the oil pan gasket at the front on 318/360 models. Measure the chain stretch, then remove the camshaft bolt, and for 316/380 engines, also take off the cup washer and fuel pump eccentric. Remove the chain along with the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets. Install the crankshaft timing gear and the shaft key, followed by the timing chain assembly and the fuel pump eccentric cam. Ensure the timing marks are aligned on the inside edges of the timing gears before tightening the camshaft gear bolt to the specified torque. Apply assembly lubricant to the outside diameter of the fuel pump eccentric cam, then install a new crankshaft front seal in the timing chain cover. Use ATV-type sealant to hold the timing chain cover gasket in place, install the timing chain cover, and tighten the mounting bolts to the specified torque. Lubricate the seal contact surface of the vibration damper, then use a sleeve and bolt type installation tool to install the vibration damper; if unavailable, a large wooden block and hammer can be used as a substitute. Lock the crankshaft and install the damper mounting bolt, tightening it to the specified torque. Finally, install the power steering pump if applicable, the water pump, and refill the cooling system.

    Q:
What are the steps involved in removing and installing the timing chain and Timing Cover in six cylinder engine on Dodge Ramcharger? Posted by Customer
    A:
Begin by draining the cooling system and then remove the radiator and fan assembly. Unscrew the retaining bolt and withdraw the pulley/damper assembly from the front end of the crankshaft, using a special puller for this operation. Partly unscrew the oil pan bolts at the forward edge, followed by the removal of the timing cover bolts, and then withdraw the timing cover and gasket. Remove the oil slinger from the end of the crankshaft if installed. At this point, check the timing chain for wear by attaching a socket and torque wrench to the camshaft sprocket bolt, applying force in the normal direction of crankshaft rotation (30 ft-lb if the cylinder head is in position with rocker gear, or 15 ft-lb if the cylinder head has been removed). Prevent the crankshaft from rotating if necessary, and measure the movement of the chain when applying force in the reverse direction; if it exceeds 1/4-inch, a new timing chain is required. Unscrew the camshaft sprocket bolt and withdraw the sprocket and chain, disengaging the chain from the crankshaft sprocket teeth. For installation, reverse the removal steps, ensuring the timing marks on the gears are aligned. Apply a 1/4-inch bead of RTV-type sealant where the oil pan gasket meets the oil pan seal, use a new timing cover gasket, and apply engine assembly lubricant to the crankshaft seal. A special threaded tool or a large wooden block and hammer will be necessary to install the vibration damper.

    Q:
What should be done with the timing cover before tightening the bolts for the 1990 Dodge Ramcharger? Posted by Customer
    A:
Attach a new gasket to the timing cover and carefully install it, taking care not to damage the oil pan gasket, and do not tighten the bolts yet.
