Tag and remove the PCV and vacuum hoses from the rocker arm cover, then remove the rocker arm cover. Start the engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature. With the engine thoroughly warmed up and idling, adjust the intake and exhaust valves, noting that the clearances for the intake and exhaust valves are different; exercise caution around moving and hot engine parts. Insert an appropriate size feeler gauge between the valve stem and the rocker arm adjusting screw; if the feeler gauge fits with a slight drag, the clearance is correct and no adjustment is needed. If the feeler gauge does not fit or is loose, carefully tighten or loosen the adjusting screw until a slight drag is felt when withdrawing the feeler gauge. Counting from the front of the engine, the exhaust valves are Nos. 1-3-5-8-10 and 12, while the intake valves are Nos. 2-4-6-7-9 and 11. The rocker arm adjusting screws are an interference thread type and do not require a locknut; always use a close-fitting box wrench to turn them. Install the rocker arm cover with a new gasket and tighten the mounting nuts evenly and securely, then reinstall the PCV and vacuum hoses. Finally, start the engine and check for oil leakage between the rocker arm cover and the cylinder head.
