- A:Inspect the control arm balljoints for looseness anytime they are separated from the steering knuckle. Check for up to 0.020-inch movement with a dial indicator or have it checked at an automotive repair shop. If replacement is indicated, replace the upper or lower control arm. For the lower balljoint, a special press tool and receiver cup is needed to remove and install the balljoint.
