Usually, the front wheel bearings are lubricated and adjusted by the factory so that they only need to be inspected for looseness, indicating possible bearing wear or an improperly tightened hub nut. The recommended intervals are to review rear wheel bearings or during the time of reviewing rear brake shoes.

To service rear wheel bearings, start with the vehicle on jack stands. Check each wheel for noise and movement. Remove the wheel and, if applicable, the caliper. Remove the grease cap, cotter pin, lock, and hub nut from the hub. Extract the outer bearing, dust seal, and inner bearing. Clean these parts with solvent and inspect for defects. Pack the bearings with high-temperature grease and apply a thin coat to the spindle. Install the grease-packed bearings, new dust seal, washer, and nut. Spin the drum/hub to seat the bearings and recheck the nut's tightness.

Use a hammer and wood dowel to drive them out.

Lubricate the new grease seal.

Carefully position the drum/hub assembly on the spindle to insert the grease-packed outer bearing. Install the washer and nut, tightening it slightly (up to 12 ft-lbs of torque). Spin the drum/hub forward to seat the bearings, then recheck the nut's tightness (approximately 12 ft-lbs). Loosen the nut until it's just loose, then snug it up by hand. Secure it with a new cotter pin and lock, bending the cotter pin ends flat against the nut. Install the grease cap with a hammer, place the wheel, and tighten the lug nuts securely. Check the bearings' condition by grasping the tire's top and bottom. Finally, lower the vehicle and retighten the lug nuts to complete the procedure.

Complete the installation by reversing the removal steps, ensuring the housing cover and differential gasket flange are clean, applying ATV-type sealant to the cover, and refilling the differential with oil.

Clean the axle housing seal bore and drive in a new seal using a piece of pipe or a large socket and a hammer.

Clean the bearings and hub with solvent, using a small brush while ensuring no bristles get stuck in the bearing rollers, and allow the parts to air dry.

Clean all parts with solvent, inspecting the bearings and races for damage. If the races need replacement, it is advisable to seek professional help.

If equipped, remove the locking hub assembly.

Carefully remove the inner cup, bearing, spacer, outer cup, and retainer plate from the hub using a special tool and adapters. For axles not equipped with integrated bearing/hub assemblies, pry out the inner bearing assembly and seal after removing the retainer bolts and retainer from the steering knuckle; for those with integrated assemblies, only the inner seal needs to be pried out.
