    Q:
How to check and adjust Shift Cable on Ram 1500? Posted by Customer
    A:
On 8HP45/845REa-speed models, the transmission does not use a shill cable. Instead, it utilizes an electronic shifter (E-shifter) which is an electronic switch/module mounted to the instrument panel. This electronic shifter communicates the transmission gear changes through electronic messaging. To check the transmission, firmly apply the parking brake and momentarily operate the starter in each shift lever position. The starter should only operate when the shift lever is in the PARK or NEUTRAL positions. If the starter operates in any other position, adjust the shift cable. If the starter still operates incorrectly after adjustment, the Transmission Range (TR) sensor is defective. To adjust the shift cable, place the shift lever in the PARK position and raise the vehicle securely on jackstands. Pry the cable end off the manual shift lever at the transmission and verify that the manual shift lever is in the PARK position. Ensure that the park lock pawl inside the transmission is engaged by trying to rotate the driveshaft. If the driveshaft does not rotate, the transmission is correctly engaged in PARK. Disengage the locking clip on the cable end and move the end of the cable in or out as required so that it snaps over the stud on the shift lever. Snap the locking clip into place and lower the vehicle. Replace any trim panels that were removed and make sure the engine starts with the parking brake applied. If the linkage appears to be adjusted correctly but the starter still operates in any other position besides PARK and NEUTRAL, replace the Transmission Range (TR) sensor. To replace the shift cable, make sure the shift lever is in the PARK position and raise the vehicle securely on jackstands. Remove the cable end from the shift lever at the transmission and pull it out of its mounting bracket. Lower the vehicle and remove the necessary instrument panel trim panels to reach the upper end of the shift cable. Remove the shift cable grommet from the firewall after pulling back the insulation. Disconnect the electrical connector from the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) solenoid and pry the cable end off the lever on the steering column. To disengage the cable assembly from the steering column bracket, squeeze the two tangs on the cable housing together and pull the cable assembly straight down. Installation is the reverse of removal, and the cable should be adjusted accordingly.
