With the tappets secured, remove the camshaft thrust plate bolts, carefully pull out the camshaft, and retrieve the tappets using a special tool. After removal, inspect the camshaft and tappets for wear, damage, and measurements. Replace components as needed.

Check the endplay and remove the camshaft thrust plate.

Remove the ignition coils and spark plugs, followed by the valve covers. Then, release the tensioner using special tools and remove the camshaft phasers. Loosen and remove the oil control valves from the camshafts and slide off both the intake and exhaust phasers. Rotate the camshafts counterclockwise to a neutral position and remove the camshaft bearing cap bolts. Lift the camshafts from the cylinder head. Remove and mark the rocker arms and hydraulic lash adjusters.

Lubricate the camshaft bearing journals and lobes with camshaft installation lube.

For tappet retention using Method One, you'll need wooden dowels to secure the tappets in their bores. Insert the dowels through the pushrod holes and secure them with rubber bands to keep the tappets raised. In Method Two, you'll use small hose clamps to retain the tappets at the top of their bores.
