When replacing entire components, additional refrigerant oil must be added equal to the amount that is removed with the component being replaced. Read the label on the oil container to verify that it is compatible with the R-134a system before adding any of it to the system. The receiver-drier should always be replaced when the compressor is replaced. To remove the compressor, have the system discharged and the refrigerant recovered by an air conditioning technician. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Loosen the right-front wheel lug nuts, then raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the wheel and the inner-fender splash shields. Remove the drivebelt. Disconnect the wire harness connected to the air conditioning compressor. Remove the fasteners securing the refrigerant lines to the compressor and detach the refrigerant lines. Plug all open fittings to prevent entry of dirt and moisture. Remove the compressor mounting fasteners and lower the compressor from the vehicle. If a new compressor is being installed, remove the drain plug and drain 1.7 ounces (50 ml) of oil into a graduated container. Installation is the reverse of removal. Install new O-rings onto the line fittings and lightly coat them with the correct refrigerant oil. Have the system evacuated, recharged, and leak tested by the shop that discharged it.
