The accumulator should be replaced whenever the compressor is replaced. Have the air conditioning system discharged by an automotive air conditioning technician. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Remove the drive belt. Remove the air intake duct resonator. Disconnect the compressor clutch electrical connector. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the compressor. Plug the open fittings to prevent the entry of dirt and moisture and discard the O-ring seals. Unbolt the compressor from the mounting brackets and lift it out of the vehicle. On Hemi engines, remove the alternator and the alternator mounting bracket. For 2009 5.7L V8 engines, the compressor can only be removed and installed from underneath the vehicle. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Disconnect the electrical connector from the compressor clutch coil. Remove the two nuts that secure the air conditioning discharge and suction line flanges. Remove the old O-rings, plug both lines, and move the lines aside. Support the compressor and remove the two mounting nuts and studs. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the compressor. If a new compressor is being installed, follow the directions with the compressor regarding the draining of excess oil prior to installation. The clutch may have to be transferred from the original to the new compressor. Installation is the reverse of removal. Replace all O-rings with new ones specifically made for air conditioning system use and compatible with refrigerant R-134a. Lubricate them with refrigerant oil. Any refrigerant oil added must also be compatible with refrigerant R-134a. Have the system evacuated, recharged, and leak-tested by the shop that discharged it.
