    Q:
How to remove and install Timing Chain and Timing Cover in Hemi engine on Ram 2500? Posted by Customer
    A:
The procedure of removing the timing system is really intricate and should be done only by highly skilled individuals. If any errors are made, they can lead to severe damage of the engine. Remove timing chains from crankshaft sprocket. The battery cable should be disconnected before starting while the engine cover should also be removed at this point. Further remove air filter housing, air intake duct, drivebelt, cooling fan, upper and lower radiator hoses and finally air conditioning compressor is taken off lastly tieing it away from engine with A/C lines attached. Remove coolant reservoir, washer reservoir, drivebelt tensioner, idler pulleys, vibration damper, power steering pump, dipstick tube support bolt, oil pan, pickup tube and heater hoses. Also remove all the bolts for the front cover and timing cover making sure that the top alignment bushings stay with cover if not then this might cause an error in installation. Remove oil pump again. Reinstall a bolt into end of crankshaft turning it until crankshaft sprocket timing mark is at 6 o'clock position with camshaft sprocket timing mark at 12 o'clock position apart from that retract tensioner and insert drill bit to keep it retracted. All three parts will be removed as one unit; camshaft sprocket assembly including camshaft sprocket, timing chain, and crankshaft sprocket as shown below. For inspection purposes, remove camshaft tensioner thrust plate, check camshaft phaser keyways for wear or damage as well as crankshaft sprocket teeth which may have become grooved or rounded over time. To install clean threads on camshaft sprocket bolt using thread locker compound before fitting anything else such as timing chains, phasers or chain gears onto block. Aligns gear up against woodruff keys in rear face of crank shaft; pushes it gently forward. To ensure protection against oil leakage, use RTV sealant only on the bottom where timing cover and oil pan meet. Cover timing chain engine block and oil pan as well. Finally, run engine, checking for leaks in coolant system and then add coolant.

    Q:
How to remove and replace the timing chain and Timing Cover in 3.6L V6 engine on Ram 1500? Posted by Customer
    A:
It is very intricate and any mistakes could lead to serious damage to the engine. You should only try it if you are extremely experienced or consult a professional. Take out the timing cover, air intake resonator, brake vacuum pump, drive belt, thermostat housing, radiator hoses, heater hose, alternator crankshaft pulley upper intake manifold and valve covers. Take care not to spoil the magnetic timing wheels on camshafts. Remove both up and down oil pans. If necessary take off the timing cover and coolant outlet housing. Temporarily set up the crankshaft pulley bolt then bring together the timing marks on both crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. Check that the phaser marks are in line with plated links. Indicate direction of rotation for all chains. Press tensioner plungers then detach timing gear splash shield. Unbolt oil pump tensioner and sprocket. Put camshaft phaser lock tool between the phasers and loosen oil control valves. Remove phasers as well as timing chains. Inspect parts for wear or damage. Replace if need be. Tidy up units then fit new chains. Rotate crankshaft verifying alignment of marks. Install before doing this coolant housing together with water pump gaskets. Apply RTV sealant so as to have a proper installation of your Timing Cover. Tighten bolts on cover before finishing other installation steps. Fill engine with coolant or oil; start vehicle for leak testing.
