Remove the brake shoes. Disconnect the hydraulic brakeline from the wheel cylinder and immediately cap the open end of the pipe to prevent loss of fluid and the entry of dirt, using a bleed nipple dust cap if available. Unbolt the wheel cylinder from the backplate; if there is difficulty reaching these bolts, the backplate can be removed with the wheel cylinder for later separation. Clean away external dirt from the wheel cylinder and pull off the dust excluding boots, then pull out the pistons. Examine the surfaces of the pistons and the cylinder bore; if they are severely scored or show signs of metal to metal rubbing, renew the wheel cylinder completely. If the components are in good condition, clean them in methylated spirit or clean hydraulic fluid, discard the rubber seals, and obtain a repair kit. Apply anti-rust-and-rubber grease, supplied in the repair kit, to the cylinder bore and piston. Fit the new seals with the lips facing the correct way and install the dust excluding boots. Coat the mating surfaces of the wheel cylinder and backing plate with jointing compound and bolt the wheel cylinder into position. Fit the brake shoes and drum, then reconnect the hydraulic line to the cylinder. Ensure that all bolts are tightened to the specified torque and bleed the appropriate hydraulic circuit upon completion.
