    Q:
How do you remove and install the master cylinder and release cylinder on Chrysler PT Cruiser? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the master cylinder, first disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Inside the vehicle, remove the knee bolster, then detach the clip securing the master cylinder pushrod to the clutch pedal and slide the pushrod off the pedal pin. Next, remove the clip securing the brake pedal to the brake booster push rod and take off the brake booster mounting nuts. Move the brake booster forward to access the master cylinder, and for models from 2001 to 2004, remove the clutch fluid reservoir. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. For those models, work under the vehicle to separate the hydraulic line using a special tool, then lower the vehicle and remove the clutch master cylinder mounting nuts in the engine compartment, taking care not to damage the hydraulic line while removing the master cylinder. For models from 2005 and later, disconnect the snap-ring retainers from the hydraulic line at the clutch slave cylinder using a small screwdriver, remove the hydraulic line, and place a pan under the vehicle to catch any residual fluid. Lower the vehicle, remove the clutch master cylinder mounting nuts, and note that the PDC or TIPM bracket may need to be removed to access the master cylinder. For installation, place the master cylinder pushrod through the firewall, route the hydraulic line into position, and install the fasteners finger tight. Inside the vehicle, connect the pushrod to the clutch pedal pin and install a new clip. Connect the clutch fluid reservoir supply line and the clutch slave cylinder, ensuring proper connection by hearing an audible click or by installing the snap ring retainers. The remainder of the installation follows the reverse order of removal, tightening the mounting fasteners securely and washing off any spilled brake fluid with water, taking care to avoid contact with paint. For the clutch slave cylinder, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and raise the vehicle securely on jackstands. For non-turbocharged models, disconnect the hydraulic quick-disconnect fitting from the clutch slave cylinder for 2002 and earlier models, or remove the clip and drive out the roll pin for 2003 and 2004 models. For 2005 and later models, disconnect the hydraulic hose after removing the snap ring retainers. Remove the bolts securing the clutch slave cylinder to the transaxle, and for 2002 and earlier models, also remove the lateral bending brace. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to securely tighten the clutch slave cylinder and lateral bending brace mounting bolts, connect the hydraulic line, and check the hydraulic fluid level in the reservoir, adding fluid as necessary. Turbocharged models utilize a release bearing that is integral to the clutch slave cylinder.
