To remove the distributor, start by detaching the cable from the negative battery terminal. Then, disconnect the primary lead from the coil and all electrical wires from the distributor. Locate the number one cylinder spark plug wire terminal on the distributor cap and remove the cap. Turn the engine over until the rotor is pointing towards the number one spark plug terminal. Make marks on the distributor base, rotor, and engine block for reference. Remove the distributor hold-down bolt and clamp, and pull the distributor straight up to remove it. To install the distributor, ensure the number one piston is at top dead center and align the rotor with the mark on the distributor base. Seat the distributor by following the appropriate steps for your engine type. Once seated, attach the hold-down clamp and bolt, and reattach the electrical wires and spark plug wires. Finally, connect the cable to the negative battery terminal and check the ignition timing before tightening the distributor hold-down bolt securely.
