The coolant temperature sensor is screwed into the underside of the intake manifold which is coolant heated. Removal of the sensor will necessitate prior draining of about half the system coolant. The sensor which controls the operation of the radiator cooling fan is of thermostatic type and is screwed into the bottom tank of the radiator. Both sensors can be tested by removing them and suspending them in water being heated. If a test bulb and battery are then connected between the fan sensor terminal and the sensor body (earth) then the test lamp should come on and go off at the temperature levels shown in the Specifications. If it does not, then the sensor will have to be renewed. The coolant temperature sensor can only be satisfactorily checked with an ohmmeter. Again, as the temperature of the water is raised, the relative resistance should match the levels given in the Specifications. If the temperature and fuel gauges both become faulty at the same time, suspect the instrument voltage regulator.
