To remove the rack and pinion, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and draining the power steering fluid. Then, remove the safety clip and pinch bolt on the intermediate shaft, and separate it from the rack and pinion shaft. Loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and remove the front wheels. Detach the tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles and mark the relationship of the front suspension cross member to the attaching bracket. Remove the front stabilizer bar mounting clamp bolts and, for ABS-equipped vehicles, remove the bolts attaching the Anti-lock Brake System hydraulic control unit. Remove the shock absorber clevis bolts, engine support bracket bolts, and the bolt attaching the engine support bracket to the transaxle mounting bracket. Support the front suspension cross member and lower it enough to remove the rack and pinion. Place a drain pan under the rack and pinion and disconnect the power steering pressure and return lines. Disconnect the pressure switch wiring harness connector and, if applicable, the speed sensing/variable assist module and solenoid control valve electrical connectors. Remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts and isolators, as well as the rack and pinion-to-cross member clamp bolts. Finally, remove the rack and pinion assembly from the vehicle. To install a new rack and pinion assembly, align the marks on the rack and pinion shaft with the marks on the intermediate shaft. Gently tap the front suspension cross member into place and ensure all electrical connectors are fully connected. Use a new rack and pinion intermediate shaft coupler pinch bolt and install the retention pin. Refill the power steering fluid, bleed the system, and install the wheels. Finally, lower the vehicle, tighten the lug nuts, and have the wheel alignment checked if necessary. To remove the pressure switch, raise the vehicle and support it on jackstands. Disconnect the pressure switch electrical connector and remove the switch using a crow foot wrench. To install, tighten the switch and refill the power steering fluid, bleeding the system as necessary.
