Before replacing the alternator, consider the following: Take the old alternator with you when purchasing a replacement unit. Ensure the new or rebuilt alternator looks identical to the old one. Check the terminals on the alternator; they should match the old alternator in number, size, and location. Examine the identification numbers on the housing or tag, making sure they match between both alternators. Note that many new or remanufactured alternators may not have a pulley installed, so you may need to transfer the pulley from the old unit to the new one. Inquire about the shop's policy regarding pulley transfer.

Install the new alternator by tightening the mounting bolts. Put the drivebelt back on and check the charging voltage to confirm proper operation. For Hemi engines, follow similar steps but also disconnect the field wire electrical connector and remove the plastic insulator cap from the B+ output terminal. Remove the battery cable retaining nut and disconnect the battery cable. Remove the alternator mounting bolts and take out the alternator. When installing the new alternator, tighten the mounting bolts.
