To remove the head, you should first depressurize the fuel system and isolate the battery. Next, it is important to empty coolant and engine oil by taking off drivebelt, idler pulleys, air filter housing and intake manifolds. To do this you will have to disconnect all wires, vacuum hoses from cylinder heads as well as ignition coils and spark plugs. Removal of catalytic converter(s), valve covers, crankshaft pulley and oil pans is also necessary. Lastly depending upon the cylinder head in question, one may be expected to take out alternator, transmission & oil dipstick tube, air conditioning compressor or heater core tube. Besides removing these parts one must get rid of timing chain cover after rotating the crankshaft to TDC. Subsequently a mechanic can proceed to remove timing chain itself together with oil control valves, timing chain tensioner/chain guides/camshafts/rocker arms/lash adjusters. At this point it will be safe for any technician to partially unscrew cylinder head bolts until they can lift the head off block comfortably. Thereafter you are required to send off your cylinder head for inspection or servicing. Ensure that mating surfaces are clean and clear when fitting in a new gasket; if there is any damage file or machine if necessary; Line up new gasket onto dowel pins with caution as it positions on top of engine block; New cylinder head bolts have now become available, and they should be tightened in the prescribed order.tighten them according to prescribed order; Finish doing what remains including changing oil/filter and refilling cooling system; Begin checking for leaks while starting an engine whether there is proper operation of an engine.

Apply clean engine oil to the threads and hardened washers of the M10 head bolts, ensuring the chamfered side faces the bolt heads, and use thread sealant on the MB head bolts.

Take off the valve covers, rocker arms, and pushrods.

Position the new gaskets correctly over the dowels in the block, ensuring the letter designations are oriented properly.

The new cylinder head gasket should be positioned over dowel pins on the block, taking note of its orientation.

Clean the block and head mating surfaces thoroughly, checking for nicks and scratches. Check for warpage using a straightedge and feeler gauge. Clean the injector nozzle seats and the block deck surface, ensuring it's within specified limits. Chase the threads in the head bolt holes with a tap and die, and measure the head bolt lengths. If the bolts are stretched beyond the allowable length, replace them.

For installation, position the new head gasket over the dowels in the block, place the cylinder head over it without disturbing the gasket, and apply engine oil to the head bolt threads and underneath the bolt heads. Install the bolts in their original locations and tighten them following the recommended sequence to the specified torque.

Remove the intake manifold and the exhaust manifolds from the cylinder heads. Also, remove the steering pump mounting bolts and move the pump aside.

The cylinder head, with the camshaft in place and the exhaust manifold attached, should be carefully lifted off the engine block, and any external components should be removed for thorough cleaning and inspection.

Install new cylinder head bolts and tighten them following the recommended sequence.
