It must be replaced when the Brake Master Cylinder breaks down. Begin by putting the container underneath the cylinder so as to trap brake fluid. Take off steel line flare nuts, lines and cap them. Drain it and remove the cylinder. If you are installing a new cylinder, transfer the plastic fluid reservoir. Lubricate them, insert back the rubber grommets and press down on the reservoir. Bench bleed the cylinder before installation since it can facilitate bleeding of hydraulic system more effectively. Fill in the reservoirs, install cover assembly, and then fix it in a cylinder. Tighten flare nuts, reinstall lines, and conclude with filling up the reservoir and bleeding brakes.
