A driveshaft transmits power between the transmission and the differential(s), with universal joints allowing operation at different angles. Three types of universal joints are used: single-cardan, double-cardan and constant velocity. Some models have a two-piece driveshaft connected at a center support bearing. The driveshaft can alter its length during vehicle operation, with an oil seal preventing fluid leakage. If leakage is evident, replace the extension housing oil seal. Factory U-joints are lubricated for life and must be replaced if issues arise. The driveshaft is a balanced unit and should be kept clean and free from accumulation. It should be reinstalled in the same position to maintain balance. Driveshaft problems are usually indicated by noise or vibration while driving.

To remove the rear driveshaft, raise the vehicle and mark the relationship of the driveshaft to the differential axle assembly mating flange or yoke. Remove the bolts securing the driveshaft flange or universal joint clamps to the differential pinion flange or yoke. Pry the universal joint away from its mating flange or yoke and lower the rear of the driveshaft.

After raising the vehicle, you should clean the grease fitting on the front driveshaft with a rag.
