Remove the two support bracket bolts at the transmission, then pry the support bracket aside enough to gain access to the lower starter mounting bolt. Additionally, on some 4WD models the driveshaft will have to be detached from the front differential companion flange for access to the starter mounting bolts.

To prepare for removing the starter, follow these initial steps: Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Raise the vehicle and ensure it is securely supported on jack stands. Remove the middle engine splash shield. Secure the steering wheel to prevent it from rotating freely.

Begin by disconnecting the cable(s) from the negative battery terminal(s). Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. On certain models with 4WD and specific transmissions, there may be a support bracket blocking access to the lower starter mounting bolt. If present, remove the support bracket bolts and pry it aside. Remove the heat shield, if equipped, from the starter motor. Next, remove the nut securing the battery cable to the terminal stud on the starter solenoid and disconnect the cable from the terminal stud. Disconnect the electrical connector from the spade terminal on the solenoid. On models with a manual transmission, remove the starter mounting bolt and nut. On models with an automatic transmission, remove the two starter mounting bolts. Move the starter motor towards the front of the vehicle until the nose of the starter pinion housing clears the transmission bellhousing. Tilt the nose down and lower the starter to access the wiring connectors more easily. Finally, disconnect the battery cable and electrical connector from the terminals on the starter motor solenoid and remove the starter. For HEMI engines, follow a similar process, but also remove the two starter motor mounting bolts. For diesel engines, disconnect the wiring harness and battery cable from the starter, remove the three starter mounting bolts, and then remove the starter.

Start by checking the cleanliness and tightness of the battery cable clamps at the battery connection. Inspect the battery cables for any defects and replace them if necessary. Test the battery's condition, and if it fails the tests, replace it with a new one. Examine the starter motor wiring and connections, ensuring the mounting bolts are tight. Check the related fuses in the engine compartment fuse box and inspect the ignition switch circuit. Verify the operation of the clutch pedal position switch or the Transmission Range (TR) sensor, as they provide voltage to the starter solenoid.

Remove the starter from the engine and bench test the starter. If the starter turns over slowly, check the starter cranking voltage and the current draw from the battery. This test must be performed with the starter assembly on the engine. Crank the engine over (for 10 seconds or less) and observe the battery voltage. It should not drop below 9.6 volts. Also, observe the current draw with an ammeter (Use an inductive ammeter to measure starter current draw). Typically a starter should not exceed 160 amps. If the starter motor amperage draw is excessive, have it tested by a dealer service department or other qualified repair shop.
