    Q:
Is overhauling a transfer case a challenging task for a do-it-yourselfer on Dodge Durango? Posted by Customer
    A:
Replacing a transfer case is not a do it your self kind of job because it involves merging and demerging of many parts, the distances between which must be altered using fit spacers and snap rings. Although it is possible for a do-it-yourself mechanic to change a transfer case and its overhaul is possible, it is advisable to take it to a transmitter repair shop since it may take longer and costly to overhaul as compared to buying a rebuilt transfer case from the dealer or auto part store. It is, however, possible for a green mechanic to attempt a rebuild if they have the right special tools and they are cautious to the extent that they make no mistakes. Tools necessary for overhaul are internal and external snap-ring pliers, bearing puller, slide hammer, set of pin punches, dial indicator and hydraulic press, if available and a large solid work bench and vice or transmission stand. During the disassembly dissection special attention should be made of the positions and methods of installation of the various parts to ease out the reassembly. Knowledge of the defective part of the transfer case can also help to pinpoint certain issues, which will make it easier to diagnose certain component and will ease the process of their replacement.
