    Before blaming the thermostat for cooling issues, check the coolant level, drive belt tension, and temperature gauge. Drain the cooling system after disconnecting the battery, remove the upper intake manifold and radiator hose. To remove the thermostat housing cover, disconnect the coolant reservoir hose. Install a new gasket material on top of an old one on the thermostat before reinstalling in into this housing cover. Refill the cooling system and reinstall the manifold; then start the engine and check for leaks as well as thermostat operation.

    Before replacing the thermostat, check the coolant level, drive belt tension, and temperature gauge. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and drain the cooling system. Remove the thermostat housing cover and tap it with a soft-face hammer if stuck. Remove the thermostat and clean the housing and cover. Install a new rubber gasket and thermostat with the jiggle valve. Install the thermostat housing cover and bolts, and refill the cooling system. Start the engine and check for leaks and proper thermostat operation.
