Dakota models do not have an expansion valve. To remove the air conditioning system, first have it discharged by a professional. Then, disconnect the negative battery terminal cable. Remove the inner fender splash shield from the right front wheel. Disconnect the refrigerant lines at the firewall by removing the plastic retainer and nut. Cap or plug the refrigerant openings. Remove the two mounting screws for the expansion valve. Detach the expansion valve from the evaporator fitting and discard the O-rings. For reassembly, use new R-134a compatible O-rings. Finally, have the system evacuated, recharged, and leak-tested by the professional. For the rear, remove the right rear interior quarter panel and carefully remove the insulation around the expansion valve. Remove the two bolts securing the refrigerant line fitting and expansion valve. Detach the refrigerant lines from the top of the valve and cap or plug the openings. Detach the expansion valve from the evaporator fitting below and discard the O-rings. Reassembly is the reverse of removal, using new R-134a compatible O-rings. Again, have the system evacuated, recharged, and leak-tested by the professional.
