    Q:
How do you properly disconnect and reinstall the steering wheel and airbag module on Dodge Neon? Posted by Customer
    A:
Check that the front wheels are aligned to the vertical with the car and then disconnect the cable from the negative terminal and wait at least two minutes before proceeding. Cases with cruise control pull two switches located on the steering wheel to get an access to the screws of the airbag module; if the model does not correspond to this type, screws and covers may be found on each side of the steering wheel. Remove the wiring connectors of the airbag and the horn and unlock the Airbag module by removing the bolt present at both sides and take the module upward. Take off the steering wheel retaining nut / bolt, then indicate the steering wheel position relative to the steering shaft, then would use a puller to get the steering wheel off the shaft, normally one installs back the nut/bolt slightly so as to use the threaded part to get some purchase. It is also necessary to install the steering wheel back for a short time and screw it clockwise for 1/2 turn and lock the steering shaft before taking out to remove the clockspring. Explode the columns of management and the multi-position switches, turn back the latches, release the electrical connector and delete the clockspring. Turn the clockspring rotor a half turn in the anti-clockwise direction and secure it by placing a paper clip in the slot provided for this purpose. For installation, if the clock spring was removed, the removal of the paper clip is done, the turning of the rotor 1/2 turn clockwise is done and it is then placed in its rightful position on the steering column to ensure proper engagement of the latch hooks and the electrical connector is properly connected. If in doubt about the position of the centering of the clockspring, turn the hub until it stays still, then reverse the turns and place a paperclip in the hole where the pin was removed, turn the rotor 1/2 turn clockwise before fixing the position of the clockspring and refitting the multi-purpose switch and the steering column trim. Screw the steering wheel onto the shaft with matching orientation of marks that are usually placed on the clockspring Rotor and then tighten the nut or a bolt of the steering to the amount of torque prescribed by the manufacturer's manual. Connect the harnesses of the horns and air bag module, tighten bolts for air bag module, reinstated cruise control switches if it is present, tighten the screws. Last, connect the black negative terminals, start the car by rotating the key to the Off position and then to On; the instrument cluster AIRBAG lamp light up for six to eight seconds and then turn off, thus showing that the airbags are fit and ready to perform, however, if the light stays on or turns off then you should consult a workshop.
