Chrysler Imperial Air Bag Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What is the purpose and functionality of the Supplemental Restraint System and Air Bag on Chrysler Imperial?
A: Subsequent derivatives are fitted with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) or air bag for the driver's protection in head-on or frontal impact accidents. This system consists of an airbag module fitted at the centre of the steering wheel, two crash sensors provided at the front end of the car and a diagnostic module provided within the car interior containing an additional crash sensor. The airbag module also comprises a housing that both incorporates the cushion and the inflator unit: the inflator assembly is located at the back of the housing so that the gas expelled activates the bag and inflates almost as soon as it receives a signal. The signal is sent through a clockspring which is an electrically conductive flat ribbon like material coiled with around 20 turns around the steering wheel axis in order to remain operational no matter which way the steering wheel is turned. The system utilizes three sensors: A front End crash sensor which is placed behind the bumper, Two Side Impact sensors another behind the bumper and a Safing sensor placed in the Airbag System Diagnostic Module (ASDM) on the Instrument Panel. Front crash sensors, these are more like pressure switches which are triggered when pressure is applied by crash impact and complete an electric circuit and produces a signal activating the so called safing sensor in the ASDM and thus deploying the airbag. The ASDM also contains the safing sensor together with an on-board microcontroller that assesses system performance at every start of the car. If everything is normal when the key is turned on, the AIRBAG light should light for a moment then go out; if the light stays on, the ASDM will record fault codes that will require service at the dealer.
