Chrysler Laser Distributor

The Chrysler Laser vehicles employ a Distributor that plays the role of ignition in the firing sequence whereby it was involved in charging high-voltage current from the ignition coil to the spark plug. Chrysler Laser models of the past came equipped with normal mechanical distributor with breaker points which aren't as durable due to several wear components that periodically need replacement. These distributors incorporated the abilities of both centrifugal and vacuum advance that enabled the control of spark timing to be customizable according to the engine conditions. Chrysler Laser vehicles also progressed their distributors from mechanical type to Hall Effect or optical sensors for better stability and no requirement of regular maintenance. Although current engines commonly employ the distributorless ignition systems, the Chrysler Laser was one of the earlier models that signify the change from mechanical to electronic ignition system in the context of presenting an advancement of technology of spark-ignition internal combustion engines.

Chrysler Laser Distributor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Install a Distributor in a Chrysler Laser?
A: Disconnect the negative cable at the battery and place it out of the way. Unplug the distributor pickup coil lead wire at the harness connector. Remove the pick-up lead connector from the retainer on 1984 and 1985 models. Remove the distributor splash shield and loosen the screws to lift off the distributor cap. Rotate the engine with a wrench until the distributor rotor is pointed at the engine block and mark the relationship of the rotor to the distributor body and the distributor to the engine block. Remove the hold-down screw or bolt and carefully lift the distributor out of the engine. Lower the distributor into position, ensuring the gasket or O-ring is seated properly and align the rotor with the mark on the engine block. If necessary, establish the proper relationship between the rotor and the number one piston position by rotating the crankshaft until the piston is at top dead center on the compression stroke. Install the distributor with the rotor pointing at the reference mark and align the distributor body and engine block marks. Install the distributor cap, hold-down bolt, and splash shield. Plug in the pickup coil lead and reconnect the negative battery cable. Check the timing and tighten the distributor hold-down bolt securely.
