Dodge Caravan A/C Compressor Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Replace an A/C Compressor on Dodge Caravan?
A: When replacing entire components, make sure to add an equal amount of refrigerant oil as the amount removed with the component being replaced. Verify compatibility with the R-134a system before adding any oil. Always replace the receiver-drier when replacing the compressor. To begin, have the system discharged and the refrigerant recovered by a technician. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and remove the drivebelt. On V6 models, disconnect the engine wire harness connector from the compressor clutch coil and remove the bracket on top of the compressor. On four-cylinder models, disconnect the compressor clutch electrical connector. Remove the refrigerant lines from the compressor and plug all open fittings. Remove the compressor mounting fasteners and lift the compressor out of the vehicle. If installing a new compressor, pour out the oil from the old compressor and add the same amount of new refrigerant oil to the new compressor. Follow any directions included with the new compressor. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring new O-rings are installed onto the line fittings and lightly coated with the correct refrigerant oil. Only use O-rings designed for A/C system applications. Finally, have the system evacuated, recharged, and leak tested by the shop that discharged it.
