Disconnect the battery and raise the vehicle. Drain the coolant and save if possible. Remove the engine splash shield and timing belt components for four-cylinder engines. Remove the water pump and clean the bolt threads and sealing surfaces. Install a new O-ring seal and apply RTV sealant. Install the pump and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. For V6 engines, loosen the pulley bolts and remove the drivebelt. Remove the pulley and pump together. Clean the bolt threads and remove the old seal. Install a new O-ring seal and RTV sealant. Position the pulley and pump and install the mounting bolts. Install the drivebelt and pulley bolts. Refill and bleed the cooling system and run the engine.

What Are the Signs of a Failing Water Pump?

A failure in the water pump can lead to engine damage so be sure to check for a leak, remove the lower engine splash shield, and use a flashlight to look for traces of coolant residue. If the water pump shaft bearings do not work, there may be a howling sound near the water pump. If there is no heat output, it may indicate a failing water pump.
