Usually, the Dodge Challenger's Camshaft Position Sensor is located directly above the camshaft, still, its position may differ depending on the model. Different styles of the Camshaft Position Sensors have been used in the different Dodge Challenger models over the years with the some of of the sensors located behind the cylinder head or near the engine block. The function of the Camshaft Position Sensor is critical as the damage will result in poor performance on an automobile engine. • Q: Where is the CMP sensor located, and How to replace it on Dodge Challenger?
A: As for the V6 engines, the CMP sensor is placed at the front part of the left cylinder head for the 2.7L engines, and on the timing belt cover for the 3.5 L engines. To replace, lift the vehicle, disconnect the electrical connector-one that has a release tab arranged at the terminal end, if accompanied with the wiring harness clip, clip it off; if not, skip this step, remove the mounting bolt and then the sensor, installation in reverse order, after replacing the sensor perform cam/crank variation learn procedure using scan tool. For 3.5L, on the electrical connector-unlock it and remove it; remove the mounting bolt and then the sensor; if reusing the old sensor, make sure you put back the spacer or if getting a new sensor, you should check and confirm if a new spacer is included; then install the sensor and do the cam/crank variation learn. For the 3.6L engine, there is need to; first remove an engine cover secondly, detach the negative terminal of the battery thirdly, in order to get to the CMP sensor, there is need to perhaps detach the upper intake manifold. Remove the electrical connector, unscrew the fastener and pull the sensor out of the valve cover, clean the threads of the fastener, examine the O-ring and the seal of the sensor, after which screw the sensor in place and go through the cam/crank variation learn. V8 engines on the right part of the timing chain cover housing, specifically on the upper side, has the CMP sensor. First, the engine cover should be unbolted and in addition the negative cable should be disconnected off the battery; then the electrical connector should be disconnected, the mounting bolt removed and lastly the sensor should be pulled out. Old O-ring should be checked and replaced if worn out, the new O-ring should be lubricated with clean engine oil before fitting the sensor and ensuring that it is firmly in place to prevent damage The installation process should then be followed by fitting of the O-ring, Cam/Crank Variation learn.
