Dodge Charger Rack and Pinion Boot Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How Do You Replace a Power Steering Gear Boot on Dodge Charger?
A: Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the wheel. Remove the tie-rod end and jam nut. Remove the rack and pinion boot clamps and slide the boot off. Check for the presence of power steering fluid in the boot. If there is a substantial amount, it means the rack and pinion seals are leaking and the rack and pinion gear should be replaced with a new or rebuilt unit. Before installing the new boot, wrap the threads and serrations on the end of the steering rod with a layer of tape so the small end of the new boot isn't damaged. Slide the new boot into position on the rack and pinion gear until it seats in the grooves, then install new clamps. Remove the tape and install the tie-rod end. Install the wheel and lug nuts. Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts. Have the front end alignment checked and, if necessary, adjusted.
