  Q: How to replace the timing belt on Dodge Charger?

  A: This engine design is an "interference" engine, so if the timing belt breaks, there will be damage to the valves and possibly the pistons, requiring removal of the cylinder heads. It is recommended to replace the water pump along with the timing belt, as it is driven by the belt. To begin, disconnect the battery cable. Remove the cooling fan assembly and accessory drivebelt. Then, take off the valve covers and loosen the rocker arm shaft bolts. Raise the vehicle and support it on jackstands. Remove the crankshaft pulley and drivebelt tensioner. Next, remove the power steering pump mounting bolts and position the pump to the side without disconnecting the fluid lines. Remove the lower and upper timing belt covers from the cylinder heads, marking the direction of rotation on the belt if it will be reinstalled. Temporarily install the crankshaft pulley bolt and align the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. Unbolt the timing belt tensioner and remove the belt. Slowly compress the tensioner in a vise until a drill bit or Allen wrench can be inserted to lock it in place. Make sure all timing marks are still aligned and start installing the new belt at the crankshaft pulley, moving counterclockwise up to the left camshaft sprocket. Keep tension on the belt as it is fed under the water pump pulley, over the right camshaft sprocket, and past the tensioner. If reusing the old belt, ensure the directional mark made earlier is pointing in the correct direction. Hold the tensioner pulley against the belt and install the tensioner. Remove the Allen key or drill bit from the tensioner to allow it to tension the pulley on the belt. Tighten the rocker arm shaft bolts in the proper sequence. Rotate the crankshaft pulley through two complete revolutions to check that the timing marks remain aligned. If not, repeat the belt installation process. The rest of the installation is the reverse of removal. Start the engine and check for leaks. Note that noise may be present upon initial start up due to air entering the timing chain tensioner. If this occurs, raise the idle to 1,600 - 2,000 rpm for ten minutes to purge the air from the tensioner. This noise should last no longer than 15 minutes after initial start up.
