Dodge Dakota Ignition Lock Cylinder

The Ignition Lock Cylinder is a feature applied in Dodge Dakota vehicles and its purpose is to enable the driver to start the vehicle's engine by simply inserting and then turning a key into a lock. This component is incorporated into the ignition switch that supplies electricity to the required circuits in the car if the right key is inserted. Traditionally the Dodge Dakota models featured the conventional column mounted ignition lock cylinder meant for promoting the car safety and security by not allowing the car to start without the key. In the past few years, the developers have incorporated the coded ignition keys, which are characterized by a computer chip that sends signals to the car's computer, thus, the engine can only start when responding key is used. However, the Ignition Lock Cylinder was made better over these years and yet it is still prone to wear- down and malfunction which makes it hard to turn the ignition and start the car. In general characteristics of the Dodge Dakota model, the feature of the Ignition Lock Cylinder has also undergone changes, covering the need in the reliability of options that define car control, distribution of security, and convenience.

Dodge Dakota Ignition Lock Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the ignition switch or key lock cylinder on Dodge Dakota?
A: That could not actually be with the ignition switch or the ignition lock cylinder; the problem could be with the transmission shift cable being out of adjustment if the key is hard to turn. Regarding the location of the ignition lock cylinder, the procedure is as follows: Disconnect the multi-connector from the negative terminal of the battery, then remove the upper and lower steering column. Unlock the steering wheel using the key and, using the same key, rotate the key to park the car indicated by the shift lever. Place the key into the RUN position and insert a slender punch into the hole of the ignition lock cylinder retaining pin, push down the pin and thereby remove the ignition lock cylinder from the steering column. Before installing the new ignition lock cylinder, make certain that the ignition key is in the RUN position, fit the inner end of the cylinder into the recesses located on the side of the lock cylinder bore that faces the inside of the car, and then turn the cylinder into the locked position. Regarding the ignition switch, you have to remove the cable that is connected to the negative terminal of the battery, and also it is necessary to disable the system of the airbag. Some of the steps include: how to remove the upper and lower steering column covers, take out the ignition lock cylinder. Pull the wires off of the clockspring and put the wiring harness off to the side and out of the way. Located in the vicinity of the tiller is the tilt lever mounting bracket, which when unbolted with the use of the Allen key, the ignition switch can be disconnected from the circuit by pulling up the white plastic lock, sliding the red button forward, and pulling the circuit out. Take out the screws that are used to hold the ignition switch on the steering column, push slightly the lock pin on the ignition switch, and take out the switch. Removal is done in reverse order to the installation process that follows it.
