Dodge Ramcharger Steering Gear Box Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to adjust Steering Gear Box on Dodge Ramcharger?
A: Some sagging can be corrected by manual turning of the inner and outer rods even without the removal of the steering gear. For change of the worm bearing preload, you have to remove the Pitman arm from the sector shaft through the use of puller after removing the nut and the thrust washer. The horn pad has to be pulled off from the Steering Wheel Attachment 170 detects that the sector shaft screw locknut has to be unlocked and the screw has to be turned back by two turns at least. Twist the wheel by 720 degrees counter clockwise if right hand steered vehicle and vice versa, then using a socket on the steering wheel nut fasten a torque wrench to the steering shaft and rotate it back to the straight position while holding the torque steady to the prescribed limit. In case the torque wrench cannot be used, the spring balance could be used provided it is mounted one inch from the centre point of the socket wrench. In order to increase the worm bearing preload rotate the worm bearing adjuster in a clockwise direction and release the worm bearing preload locknut and then lock it when done. For sector gear adjustment turn the steering wheel to the left and then to the right as far as it can be turned, count the turns and then turn back half a turn. Tighten the sector shaft screw and lead screw until all the clearence between ball nut rack and corresponding teeth of sector gear have been eliminated and then tighten the lock nut. Check and turn the steering wheel a quarter turn from center and apply the measured force to return the steering wheel back to the center, should be within limits, adjust if necessary. Only when these adjustments have been made correctly, align the wheels and steering wheel, before fitting the Pitman arm on. For power steering sector shaft adjustment, the relay rod ball joint taper pin should be disconnected from the Pitman arm, the engine should be switched on and the same should be allowed to run on the idle condition. With the wheel in the straight-ahead position spin it from side to side through 10 smaller turns and back to the center. Turn the sector shaft adjusting screw in a clockwise direction backward until the backlash occurs, and then turn in further until the backlash is missing while an additional three fourths to half turn is usually made before tightening the locknut. At last, reconnect the relay rod balljoint and turn off the engine.
