Q: How to Replace the Catalytic Converter on a Jeep Patriot?
A: On 2.4L (AWD) models, there are two catalytic converters used, one that combines the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter into a single unit called a “maniverter” and an under-floor converter. Raise the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands. Before trying to loosen the nuts and bolts at the flange(s) and the clamp bolt and nut behind the converter (on models so equipped), spray them with penetrating oil and wait the specified amount of time for the penetrant to loosen things up. Remove the Oxygen Sensor from the converter. Remove the rear portion of the exhaust system. Remove the flange nuts at the exhaust manifold and detach the converter from the exhaust manifold. Before installing the converter, coat the threads of the exhaust manifold flange nuts and bolts, and the clamp bolt with anti-seize compound. Tighten the fasteners securely. Installation is otherwise the reverse of removal.
