How Can I Diagnose and Repair a Malfunctioning Catalytic Converter on Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 2500?

A catalytic converter is an emission control device in the exhaust system that reduces certain pollutants in the exhaust gas stream. There are two types: an oxidation catalyst that reduces hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO), and a reduction catalyst that reduces oxides of nitrogen (NOx). If you suspect a malfunction, take the vehicle to a dealer or authorized emission inspection facility for diagnosis and repair as the test equipment for a catalytic converter is expensive. When servicing underbody components, inspect the converter for leaks, corrosion, and damage. To check for a restricted converter, use a vacuum gauge on an intake manifold vacuum source.
