    Q:
How Can I Diagnose and Repair a Malfunctioning Catalytic Converter on Dodge Ram 3500? Posted by Customer
    A:
A catalytic converter is an emission control device in the exhaust system that reduces certain pollutants in the exhaust gas stream. There are two types: an oxidation catalyst that reduces hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO), and a reduction catalyst that reduces oxides of nitrogen (NOx). If you suspect a malfunction, take the vehicle to a dealer or authorized emission inspection facility for diagnosis and repair as the test equipment for a catalytic converter is expensive. When servicing underbody components, inspect the converter for leaks, corrosion, and damage. To check for a restricted converter, use a vacuum gauge on an intake manifold vacuum source. Warm the engine to operating temperature, note the vacuum reading at idle, and then quickly open and close the throttle, noting the vacuum readings. If the fourth reading is significantly lower than the idle reading, the exhaust system might be restricted. To replace the converter, raise the vehicle, disconnect electrical connectors for oxygen sensors, and remove the catalytic converter assembly, using new flange gaskets and bolts during installation.
