This procedure applies to 3.3L/3.8L V6 engines only.

Each camshaft lobe height should be measured with a micrometer and compared to the specified height. Subtract the measured height from the specified height to compute wear on the cam lobes.

Inspect the bearings in the block for damage, using a small hole gauge and micrometer to determine the inside diameter and calculate oil clearance. Excessive clearance indicates the need for new bearings.

The remaining steps follow the reverse order of the removal procedure.

If any caps stick, gently tap them with a soft-face hammer to avoid damaging the camshaft or housing.

To begin the installation process, dip the hydraulic lash adjusters in clean engine oil and install them in their original locations. Apply grease or engine assembly lube to the rocker arm contact points and rollers and install them in their original locations. Lubricate the camshaft bearing journals and lobes and carefully install the camshafts in the cylinder head. Install the camshaft bearing caps and tighten them to the specified torque. Rotate the camshafts and verify the alignment holes are in the neutral position. Slide the intake and exhaust phasers onto the camshafts and ensure the marks are aligned. Install the oil control valves into the camshaft phasers and tighten them to the specified torque. Release the tensioner plunger and rotate the engine to verify the alignment marks.

After disconnecting the battery, you should remove the valve covers.

Complete the remaining installation steps, change the oil and oil filter, fill the cooling system with coolant, start the engine to check for oil pressure and leaks, and break in the new components if necessary.

For tappet retention using Method One, you'll need wooden dowels to secure the tappets in their bores. Insert the dowels through the pushrod holes and secure them with rubber bands to keep the tappets raised. In Method Two, you'll use small hose clamps to retain the tappets at the top of their bores.
