Take out the negative battery cable. Take off the valve cover(s). Turn the engine in a clockwise direction with a socket and ratchet until "V6" or "V8" marks are at 12 o'clock position on the camshaft sprockets. Put alignment marks on both camshaft sprockets by putting it on chain links of two timing chains. At the end of their torque specs, loosen and re-torque cam sprocket bolts by hand. Put a wedge in behind the secondary chain and tensioner to hold it in place.Set retaining bolts aside that were used for holding on camshaft sprockets. The camshaft is supported by five bearing caps, each secured by two fasteners, numbered from 1 to 5 starting at the drivebelt end of the engine. If the caps are not numbered, mark them to ensure correct reinstallation.

To check the camshaft runout, place the camshaft between two V-blocks and set up a dial indicator on the center journal. Zero the dial indicator before turning the camshaft slowly to note the total indicator reading.

Slide the camshaft sprockets onto the camshafts and align the marks on the sprockets with their corresponding marks on the cylinder heads.

Examine the camshaft lobes for discoloration, scoring, or uneven wear. If they are in good condition and lobe lift measurements are as specified, the camshaft can be reused.

The final step is to install the thrust plate and bolts, tightening them to the specified torque.

To begin the installation process, dip the hydraulic lash adjusters in clean engine oil and install them in their original locations. Apply grease or engine assembly lube to the rocker arm contact points and rollers and install them in their original locations. Lubricate the camshaft bearing journals and lobes and carefully install the camshafts in the cylinder head. Install the camshaft bearing caps and tighten them to the specified torque. Rotate the camshafts and verify the alignment holes are in the neutral position. Slide the intake and exhaust phasers onto the camshafts and ensure the marks are aligned. Install the oil control valves into the camshaft phasers and tighten them to the specified torque. Release the tensioner plunger and rotate the engine to verify the alignment marks.

Use a long bolt as a handle to carefully pull the camshaft out while turning it.

Remove all tappet retaining dowels or clamps and proceed with the reassembly of pushrods, rocker arms, and other components. Adjust the valve clearance and complete the installation process, including changing the engine oil and filter. If the side cover was removed, install it with a new gasket.
